Sustainable GB Potato Packaging

Summary

The project consortium was led by the AHDB Potatoes and included  Pira International, Imperial College, Mylnefield Research Services, Potatopak Ltd, Produce Packaging, the Potato Processors Association, the Fresh Produce Consortium, McCain Foods, Greenvale Foods, Organic Farm Foods and the Town and Country Communications Group.

Potential benefits resulting from this introduction of PS packaging to the environment may include a reduction of processing waste and GHG emissions and more efficient energy use if the product's lifecycle is compared to standard alternatives. This coupled with 100% biodegradability will produce tools to help provide sustainable solutions to emissions and waste disposal issues. The product also offers potential commercial and employment opportunities to those in the supply chain, particularly those in the rural economy.
