About Strategic Centre for Field Vegetables Scotland - Brassicas

  • East of Scotland Growers Ltd (ESG) is a farmers' co-operative founded in 1987.
  • Based at Cupar in Fife they specialise in broccoli and cauliflowers.
  • AHDB also worked with East of Scotland based Kettle Produce, who grow brussels sprouts and swedes, to carry out the trials.

A series of trials were conducted over the 2021 brassica growing season at fields managed by East of Scotland Growers at Balmullo, Fife.

The grower-led trials built on previous work looking at methods of preventing downy mildew in both cauliflower and broccoli, the impact of bio-stimulants on crop health and vigour, and the use of herbicides that have shown promise in AHDB’s SCEPTREplus trials.

They ran nitrogen response trials which have been replicated across each of AHDB's three strategic centres for brassicas in Lincolnshire, Cornwall and the East of Scotland. The trials assessed the right balance (amount) of nitrogen to apply.
