Sugar beet damage associated with the minor thrips species Caliothrips fasciatus

As well as damage caused by onion thrips and field thrips, other thrips, such as Caliothrips fasciatus, can cause damage to sugar beet. 

Scientific name: Caliothrips fasciatus 

On sugar beet, several thrips feed on mainly young leaves, causing superficial silvering, puckering, or reddening.  

Attacks on still-curled heart leaves can prevent normal growth and leaf expansion.  

Damage to the hypocotyl near the soil surface is hard to prevent and can cause seedling death.  

Although Caliothrips fasciatus can cause such damage, thrips damage in sugar beet is more commonly caused by field thrips and onion thrips.
