Soil management strategies to improve soil quality and cut operating costs in sweetcorn production

Controlled Traffic Farming (CTF) aims to restrict soil compaction from wheel traffic to the least possible field area. Within many horticultural systems, CTF is challenging to implement because of the wide variety of crops grown and machinery used. This case study illustrates how Barfoots of Botley Ltd implemented CTF at their farms in Sussex and Hampshire.  It includes -

  • A background to the business and their approach to soil management
  • Establishing the extent of wheel tracking before CTF was introduced
  • How tracking changed with the introduction of CTF
  • The cost of introducing CTF
